Today a coworker and I used Uber Pool, when we had our ride confirmed it said we were getting picked up in a Mazda 626. This confused me, as the newest 626 was built in 2002.
When it a 2 or so year old Mazda 6 showed up I asked for the plate, since cities are terrible with GPS, and lo-and-behold there is our car. My question is, why would they even bother offering the option of the 626 on Uber? The oldest I’ve ever seen an eligible car be in 2004. I guess the consequences on knowing cars...

Can we pay extra to ride in a 626?

Dont think so, but if you request it to Uber I’m sure they would take it under advisement.
It could be a default option. Uber X, Uber Black, Uber 626

had a high school buddy with one of those 5dr hatch 626s with the 5 spd - no headroom but lots of fun.

I had a similar issue when our ride was listed as a Camry Solara. You can’t drive an Uber coupe. It was just a Camry.

I recently got picked up in a 260k mile ‘03 Spectra, so anything can be expected from Uber.

Uber in some markets allows cars up to 15 years old. That still wouldn’t cover the 626, but would have up until recently, so it’s not shocking it would be an option. I’m surprised they aren’t just pulling the car information based on VIN though.

I saw a 626 like the one pictured a few days ago. I was shocked that there was no apparent rust in the wheel wells.

Meet Uber’s latest fleet, all composed of 2004 or newer vehicles. :D.
Here’s a Lada Riva (sold in Russia up to 2012).
Now it’s the unmistakable Bristol Blenheim (it’s a Bristol).
Uber’s cutting edge Volkswagen T2 (built under license in Brazil).
Iconic taxi, the Morris Oxford (built as a Hindustan Ambassador in India).
And a Morgan with a chassis made of trees, starting production in 1955, why not?
All new in 2004! The Morgan is still available today in 2018.
